New Music 4.25.2012
Well... I will call him the most underrated male R&B vocalist because he is. Mario is just that dude. I don't know who is working in his camp, but his voice deserves to be at the height of R&B and not just an afterthought like it seems at times. However, I'm feeling this new song. Lyrically, he's too old for some of the stuff he says, but the groove is real cool. Check out Mario's "Too Sexy" and let me know what you think about it.
I was a fan of the ABC hit show Lincoln Heights who knew that lil' Taylor Sutton had skill back then. Tay Sutton better known as Mishon Ratliff has been on the scene for quite some time. Mishon has a new song out "Victoria's Secret". Now let me tell you - this song is FAR from where it could lead to. Mishon is only 19, so some of the adult connotations where this could go, say if R. Kelly was writing and performing this - but it has its subtle hints. Pretty cool track though...
Now I told you people back a few weeks ago, this little boy is going to take the world by storm. Torion Sellers is a young monster. I mean, his first song that we previewed here on the site was cool, but he lets his audience HAVE it in the opening moments of this track. I have to give credit where credit is due. SHOUTOUT to ThisisRnB.com for introducing me to this guy and today's feature of the music. YMCMB has a nice little acquisition on their hands.

#FRESHFRIDAY (4/20/2012)
Brandon Hines is probably the veteran amongst the #FRESHFRIDAY group. As an artist who has been lauded for his crooning skills, Brandon has been in the game for awhile. I remember my first experiences with Brandon Hines music -- he was perhaps one of the trailblazers of successful mixtapes. And boy ... those joints ROCKED. As a relatively young writer, singer and all-around artist, this Detroit native and Howard Alum is a great talent. The number of notable artists and producers that this guy has worked with or been associated with (currently associated with SoSoDef & Jermaine Dupri) is absolutely ridiculous! If you are not acquainted with his ability of his work, I'm sure you will be able to find has free album "In Search Of" on his website. As of recent, he has a new single "Yes You Are" , in addition to a feature on the soundtrack to the upcoming hit-movie, Think Like A Man starring Kevin Hart, Terrence J., Meagan Good, and Taraji P. Henson (just to name a FEW!). I rocks with this one!
This is going to take you back... but there was this cat in the early 2000s that had a song out called "I Don't Wanna Hurt You", and it was always on BET's Midnight Love... by an artist name Latif. Well... guess what? Latif is back. He fits the current R&B/Soul storyline - the comeback. Latif has decided to grace us with a new mixtape. It is one that you will want to have in your car. It sounds good, it's easy listening music, and it truly exemplifies the Philadelphia Soul that I absolutely gotta love. Download this mixtape and let me know what you think about it.
Newcomer Lamar Starzz is making heads turn. He can sing, no doubt about that. In addition to his YouTube series that he is producing leading up to the mixtape he plans on releasing soon entitled "Lamar Starzz 24/7 R&B". He reminds me of Johnta Austin with not as much rasp. That may be a great writer/priducer combination for him (I said it first!). I like the song though. It is adult without being too vulgar and has a healthy doce of soul that makes you wanna hit the repeat button. I'm definitely anticipating his project. Hopefully the production will be JUST as good as his latest song "Don't Worry". I know you will like this!

New Music 4.17.12
I love happening upon something that I don't usualy expect. Today's new music are from two people that I least expected to appear on this blog...
We know him for producing HITS like "No Bullsh*t" with Chris Brown but Kevin McCall is now keeping some of the hits for himself. With summer coming soon, McCall has tapped 2011 Breakout STAR Big Sean for this new joint "Naked" and it is a BANGER. I had to hit replay!
So you know it wouldn't be a year in music if Jeremih didn't give us a groove/stripper anthem for the summer. He got one right now. This "Late Nights" is kinda cool though. I like the fact that he has found a niche in music and he appeals to a demographic that wants to hear music that represents them as well. He's not my favorite, but I gotta respect his hustle and the song is nice lil' groove.

New Music for Your Weekend!~
Well you know it's new music season ... and several artists have put out new material.
Since doing that Music Matters moment, fans have been dying for new music from Luke James. Like I told you a few weeks ago, this dude has some serious star potential. His latest musical offering, "Mo Betta Blues" should be in somebody's movie soundtrack. It paints a vocal and instrumental moving picture that cannot be limited to a four-minute video treatment. Just take listen and see what I mean...
Eric Benet has a new song out! This "Harriett Jones" is neo soul's fresh cup of coffee in the morning. This track proves why Eric is one of my favorite male vocalist period. He's incredibly consistent with his music. Check out this lyric video.

#FreshFriday 4.13.12
#FRESHFRIDAY is a good one today!!
Zshatwa is just as interesting as her name is. Finding her music on SingersRoom.com, I did some more research on her. She is an independent artist that is garnering quite a bit of national respect. I don't know why her face reminds me of the 1990's Coko of SWV, but she has a real sweet sound. Zshatwa will be putting on an EP on April 17th, and hopefully MIC'D Up will have a link to that. Check out her single, "Me + You".
New York-based artist Kirby Lauryen has such a pure voice. She carries so much emotion and releases it with great precision. I came across the artist and at first I wasn't sure about introducing to you all. After I listened to an entire track, I knew you had to check her out. She is currently an independent artist garning all sorts of respect and acclaim for her gift. She is currently apart of a showcase series with one of my favorite neo-soul artist, Mr. Eric Roberson. She also has recently released an EP that I think you should download for the FREE.
While at work today, I've been listening to this mixtape that reminds me of a cross between Frank Ocean and The Weeknd but his voice adds a nice contrast. This cat Michael Francis has talent. This is another one of those mixtapes that you will be referring to when you list the top mixtapes of the year. He has a nice refreshing sound, and people have just been really giving this guy some burn. Even though you have to email chc@michaelfrancismusic.com to get the whole mixtape - you can listen to the entire thing on his website. (Click the hyperlink) ... It's title "Cold Heart Chronicles" really sets the material up nicely. I love when production and talent meet and collaborate to produce ART like this. I think you will enjoy it.
BJ The Chicago Kid is that guy. Repping his hometown Chicago, BJ shows us why Chicago produces some of the most talented artists with the greatest longevity and relevance (i.e. R. Kelly, Kanye West, and Common - just to name a few). This kid does NOT play around when it comes to his music. His voice is reminiscent of a little D'Angelo and Prince and is accompanied by a sound that is not easily forgetable. I mean he can rock, give you good ballad, and groove you too. He's an all around guy. I promise his latest EP Pineapple Now-Laters is worth every bit of a buy from iTunes. I buy music that I believe - and this dude... I believe! I can't wait until he gets the national and international boost that he needs. Promise you want to have this one in your collection! If you don't believe me - preview this "Good Lov'n" joint. One of my favorites off the project...

New Music (4.12.12)
SWV continues to wow us with the new music. I have heard quite a bit of the new album, and as I have said before, I'm happy that they are putting out music that reflects who they are and what they've done. Their newest installment, "It's All About You" is nice! I like the harmonies, and for those who think that they ain't got it (yea, I know it isn't the best ENGLISH) ... they have it - and real nice too.
I debated putting this on my page for fear of being on his bandwagon, but this Frank Ocean song bangs. This song was written for the Backstreet Boys awhile ago. From what I gather, he will be releasing unreleased tracks that he has done in the past. I know some of the artists that should have recorded his material will be kicking themselves for this - because he will get positive press. Say what you want about his qwerky personality and some of the "odd" things that he does that obscures him in popular conversation at times - the man has some serious pen game! Mainstream artists are really biting his style and he continues to prove why he is an innovator at his craft. He truly is in a category of his own. This "PDA" joint may could have revamped their career... *shrug*
This song reminds me of the year (around 2006 or 2007) that everybody wanted to write songs about strippers. However, I gotta give it to Chrishan on his delivery. He handled this song from beginning to end. I can't say that I approve or detest of the subject matter (LOL!) but the song is catchy (as I sit here and do the "Sigma-neck" at my desk). However, let me know if you feeling it! And if you start reminiscing about a "Sweet Vicki" experience - Chrishan accomplished what he set out to do (and what most artists want you to do) -- have a personal experience that connects you to the song.

#FreshFriday (4/6/12)
So I just happened upon this project. Whereas it might not be brand new - it's definitely new to me! Eric Bellinger is an amazing talent that needs the appropriate credit for the soulful sounds that he brings to the R&B genre. As a young gunner is a singer AND songwriter from Los Angeles. He's been paying dues for quite sometime as a performer, and although many people are acquainted with artists that he's worked with (JoJo, Chris Brown, Symphonique, and Selena Gomez) - we really aren't acquainted with his voice as much as we probably should be. Well I got his mixtape here on my site because he's dope! Let me know how you feel about this rendering.
Twitter... Follow this dude - @ImSoMaleek. I was perusing the mixtape releases of this week, and I came upon this guy's material. He is SO dope. In this mixtape, Maleek Leggett covers some raps songs and turns 'em into R&B bangers. His creativity and vocal ability will propel him far. I'll warn you now, he's not doing what MANY other artists are doing as they release mixtapes (biting off "different" people like Frank Ocean), he's being himself - and it sounds GREAT. This will be one of those mixtapes that you will want to have on repeat this spring/summer. From an artistic standpoint, I think incredible singers are able to negotiate their talent and precision. He sings extremely well, but he's not busy; he's precise and intentional with his delivery - allowing you to really appreciate this as a complete body of work. You have got to get this material! I promise, it already ranks UP THERE on this year's best mixtapes!
And to give you a little more... Here's a video of his joint, "Green Eggs & Ham"
Rita Ora is all over the place. She has some wonderful crossover appeal without losing the soulful part of her voice. She already has one other song out "Hot Right Now", but with Roc Nation supporting her - she keeps churning out hits. It doesn't help that she is apart of an elite class of British musicians that are gaining American popularity. This young starlet has real power and she does it being uniquely her without fulfilling most of the checklist of "how-to-become-a-singing-sensation". It's not formula with this girl, she has talent. If you're not hip to her, check out the video of her newest single, "R.I.P." By the way, I believe this song has a positive reinforcement message to women as well.

NEW in GOSPEL (4.5.2012)
Listen... if you don't have that Marvin Sapp... SMH! I seriously went into worship while listening to it yesterday. That CD is powerful. Given the recent loss of his wife, the title of the project is so appropriate. Everything about this project is TIMELY and INTENTIONAL. Furthermore, coupling Pastor Sapp's leading, vocal direction of Myron Butler, and production by Aaron Lindsey - is a #WINNING combination. I appreciate the musicianship, the finesse and the strength of this project. I like that Pastor Sapp zeros in on the things that he does well, and remains consistent in his delivery. And let me just warn you now... listening to the "Hymn Medley" will SEND YOU IN!!! If you get this project, you will not be disappointed. Verity - you did well with this project, and this is what I will be expecting from all of your artists. Lead single from his latest installment, I Win, is Marvin Sapp's "My Testimony".
I told you all about this project a few weeks ago, but I just wanted to subtlety remind you about J.J. Hairston and Youthful Praise's latest project After This that just released on March 27th. This album will be the album that choirs will be drawing material from this year. It is a different sound for Youthful Praise too. I love the maturity and richness that they've developed and the execution is great. This project marks 20 years for Youthful Praise's ministry. It's great to see a choir that has stood the test of time, proclaiming kingdom messages with poise and precision. I think that this project highlights the innovation of Youthful Praise. The project features gospel favorites like James Fortune, Tye Tribbett, powerhouse-alto Lisa Knowles (YouTube her... BANANAS!), Pastor Hezekiah Walker, Pastor John P. Kee, and THE Lashun Pace. I wouldn't be a good brother if I didn't shoutout my boy David McClure (a YP tenor)... he leads a song on the project as well giving the saints some of his GOOD singing on this project as well. Title-track from the project, here's "After This".

this next review is done by Ms. Jordan Welch
Take 6 is
back with a new album, “One”. This album
encompasses all of the traditional crazy progressions and amazing harmonies
that we all know and love from this jazz acapella group. With songs like “What a Friend We Have in
Jesus”, “In My Heart”, this group without a doubt can take what we know to be
traditional and add an unforgettable spin to it. Also a strong piece in their music is their
ability to encompass story telling. In
previous albums, with songs like “David and Goliath”, Take 6 has made story
telling in songs to be compelling and very entertaining. This most certainly reigns true with this
album’s “Noah”. Take 6 has also done
some outside of the box executions, with surprise jazz segments that take you
to a jazz paradise and makes you truly appreciate the gift inside of this group
as they make murals with their voices to truly get lost in the beauty of their
sound.
Take 6 is one of my favorite groups across genres of all time. In addition to remaining relevant, they are the archetype for complex harmonies. Whereas many people use digital effects to accomplish polyvocal rhythms and dissonant harmonies, Take 6 has been doing it naturally for years. This latest installment is a testament to the tradition of being inherently innovative. Thank YOU Take 6!!
New in MUSIC (4/05/12)
As you know SWV is about to release a new project on April 17th. I'm so glad that they are back and they haven't missed a step. I like it when groups/artists make comebacks and keep the integrity of their sound but evolve to remain relevant. SWV still gives you 90's New Jack Swing type music, but they have a new millennium groove without overdoing it. I'm glad that this generation have the opportunity to expand their horizons beyond the pop-driven music that we have been inundated with in the past few years. Here's an album sampler of their new project entitled I Missed Us.
Kelly Rowland is going full speed ahead. While former-bandmate Beyonce has taken a sabbatical from music since having her baby, Kelly has struck gold. From hot singles like, "Motivation" & "Lay it On Me" to cameo appearances as the best friend of LaLa on LaLa's Full Court Life, everything she does seems likeable. At first glance of this song, I was concerned about the collaboration between her and Bei Major. For me, he's hit-or-miss, and she's the new "it" girl - so I was wondering how the song would work, but I soon found that this mellow track is a winner. I love the ambient background vocals: it's an atmosphere changer. Download and listen to it. Definitely feels like summer.
It's been about a year and a half since we heard some of industry's big male stars doing promotional spots for No Boys Allowed. Now, Keri Hilson is back in the saddle and I think this one of her best vocal performances yet. "Freedom Ride" is an extremely well-written lyrical exposition about a couple who "took a break" and now Hilson is on the losing end. This song will be featured in the upcoming Steve Harvey bestseller novel-turned-movie, Think Like a Man. Keri shuts this track down! I keep telling people that REAL singing is about to bust to the forefront. If artists keep producing songs like this, I can only imagine what the rest of 2012 will look like.
I'm beginning to think that the ladies of Xscape are better when their apart than when they were together. Kandi has been doing very well with her business ventures and music writing; Tiny is doing well with her marriage, TV show, and supporting the artists in her house, and now Ms. Latocha Scott is releasing a song. Latocha was (in my opinion) the lead singer of Xscape. She had the power and runs of the group which propelled many of their hit songs into our ears. Her latest offering "Bad Timing" is a solid performance and I think you will like how the song situates itself in contemporary R&B.
OTHER MUSIC NEWS:
Be on the lookout for my favorite male vocalist right now - Mr. Eric Benet. He will be releasing his project on June 5th, entitled The One. He has a couple of features that he already given us information on: his daughter, India, Shaggy, AND LIL'WAYNE [that man is EATING good with all these features he's been getting].
April 18th (and we will have more to feature about this), a budding star in the music world - Mr. Kevin Cossom will be releasing his long-awaited project Hook vs. Bridge II. Kevin is the man behind the "Knock You Down" (among others) by Keri Hilson, and I know this project will be DOPE! Pay attention in the coming weeks, hopefully it'll be featured on Fresh Friday post.

New MUSIC 4.3.12
Back to the ballads and without the assistance of Bad Boy and Diddy, Day 26 is going back to the drawing board with this. Personally, I feel like Que would have enhanced this song quite a bit - just because it sounds like his tone. HOWEVER -- I like this song. This is called "Radio". I like the assertive role that Brian takes with this track, he needed a lead just like this.

#FRESHFRIDAY (3/30 - R&B/Pop/Soul) - LATE post
This week's edition of #FRESHFRIDAY is dedicated to the lovely and quite beautiful Jhene Aiko. She came out of NOWHERE last year and had one of the TOP mixtapes PERIOD with Sailing Souls. Her voice literally soars. I like unique voices and her's has a innocent quality to it, but it still retains maturity. Her mixtape was so dope that by the time most people found out about her and her talents, she was signed to Def Jam. Recently, Jhene released a video treatment as a teaser for her upcoming album, which is rumored to be titled Souled Out. If you don't have the mixtape, here's the link:
Okay... I remember this team when they were YouTube sensations. Karmin has moved to the big leagues. I guess it helps when you are promoted by Ellen DeGeneres among other major networks that have picked these guys up. I love the tone of Amy's voice. She's so clear and intentional as a singer. You will see that they've gone from the low-budget home videos that hit YouTube to now videos directed by Marc Klasfeld - who by the way, has a VERY impressive music video resume. This is their new song, "Brokenhearted". I encourage you that if you are not hip to their music that you go do your research.
View her teaser video "3:16AM". The videography is nice, and there is just something real sexy about this girl.
Okay... I remember this team when they were YouTube sensations. Karmin has moved to the big leagues. Emeli Sande. WOW! I'm beginning to think that the UK has really embraced and taken over a Soul movement that the United States needs to tap into. This young lady has a unique look, with rich tone that is reminiscent of Beyonce before pop-mania. Emeli can CERTAINLY sing and I love her sound. She, along with many other artists that I've blogged about, renew my faith in real singing. It helps that she has already gone platinum in the UK and she will release her project in the US in June. i FULLY expect Adel-like sales in teh US.
New MUSIC 4.12.2012
Normally, I would pass right by this track, and just keep it moving. But the collabo had me intrigued. Surprisingly enough, it is a nice lil' track. Pleasure P teamed up with Estelle for this "Witness" track. Estelle's background vocals on her feature are subtlely dope. Something about this song reminds me of church though. LOL! I think you'll pick it up too.
Chris Brown is feeling rather generous. Perhaps his latest public relation moves in music could be the future of the music industry: release a few free tracks to promote for an album that may/may not have the songs on them. Over the weekend, Brown released TWO tracks, "Oh Yeah" and "See it Through". If you all know me - I pull for Chris Brown as a performer/singer because I believe he has true star power. Listen to these two tracks... I think you'll be pleased.
